William Gatch Hiking Accident Statesboro, GA Death and Obituary: In Loving Memory

William Cooper Gatch, a beloved student from the University of Georgia, tragically passed away on Monday, April 6, following a hiking accident at Sleeping Giant State Park in Connecticut. The 23-year-old was reported to have fallen from an unmarked trail just before noon, and despite quick response from emergency teams, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

Gatch, a dedicated senior majoring in Agricultural Education, was set to graduate this spring. A proud graduate of Southeast Bulloch High School, he had been student-teaching at Madison County High School, where he inspired his students with his passion for agriculture and hands-on learning. His colleagues and pupils admired his enthusiasm and commitment to fostering a love for education.

Growing up in Statesboro, Georgia, William was known for his hardworking, kind, and compassionate nature. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with others, whether through mentoring students or fixing things with his hands—a hobby he fondly referred to as “piddling.” His family, friends, and mentors recall a young man whose love for the outdoors was unmatched. Fishing trips to his family’s pond and time spent along the Ogeechee River were among his happiest moments, a time for peace and reflection.

William leaves behind his parents, Jason and Delena Gatch; his sister, Whitley Gatch; his aunt Dora Bell; and his grandmother, Janice Cowart. His family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the first responders who assisted at the scene, noting their compassion during an incredibly difficult time.
