The Dunkirk City School District is deeply grieving the loss of Danielle Russell, the beloved principal of School 5, whose sudden passing has left a profound void in the community. Superintendent Brian Swatland confirmed the news, honoring Russell’s exceptional dedication to education and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
Danielle Russell’s journey with Dunkirk City Schools began in 2021, when she served as Principal of School 7 and Director of Special Education. Her leadership qualities quickly shone through, and she later transitioned to become the principal of School 5, where she was warmly embraced by students, staff, and families alike.
“Mrs. Russell was a devoted and caring administrator who loved our district and the family and students she worked with at School 5,” said Swatland. “She influenced many lives through her dedication to creating and nurturing the School 5 family.” Russell’s impact extended beyond her academic leadership, as she created a sense of community where students felt valued, heard, and supported.
Her approach to education was grounded in empathy, understanding, and personal growth. Teachers and students remember her as approachable, compassionate, and genuinely invested in their success and well-being. She fostered an environment where both academic and emotional growth were prioritized, ensuring that her influence would be felt for years to come.
Russell’s passing comes after a leave of absence that began on March 23 for health reasons. The news has been met with overwhelming grief across Dunkirk, prompting the district to offer counseling services to help students, staff, and families navigate this difficult time.
In her memory, Danielle Russell’s family has set up a GoFundMe to establish an education-based scholarship in her name, ensuring that her passion for teaching and learning continues to inspire future generations. Carol Smith has been appointed as interim principal of School 5, providing continuity for students during this period of mourning.
Superintendent Swatland reflected on the collective sense of loss, saying, “The entire ONE Dunkirk community will deeply miss her.” Danielle Russell’s dedication, leadership, and compassion have left an indelible mark on the district, her students, and the community at large.
