Jarvis Butts Suicide Michigan Death, Obituary
Jarvis Butts, whose recent convictions for the killing of 13‑year‑old Na’Ziyah Harris and the sexual assault of multiple minors drew widespread public attention, has died while in state custody. He was 43.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Butts was found unresponsive Thursday at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson. Officials reported that staff attempted life‑saving measures, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. The Michigan State Police are investigating the circumstances, and the death is currently being treated as a suicide.
Butts’ passing comes just two weeks after he was sentenced to 35–60 years in prison for second‑degree murder in the disappearance and death of Harris, whose body has never been recovered. As part of his plea agreement, he was required to disclose information about the location of her remains in an effort to provide her family with a measure of closure. Prosecutors said Harris had been groomed by Butts for years and was pregnant at the time of her death.
In addition to the murder conviction, Butts had received five separate 10–15‑year sentences for sexually assaulting girls between the ages of 4 and 13. These crimes, which predated Harris’s disappearance, added to a prior conviction for assaulting a child and painted a long, disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
His death closes a chapter in a case that has shaken families, communities, and advocates for child safety. While the legal proceedings against him have ended, the impact of his actions continues to reverberate—most profoundly for the victims, their families, and all those who sought justice on their behalf.
Authorities say the investigation into his death remains active as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding his final hours.
